5 Self-Care Tips From a Dog
Oh, the stories our little dog could tell.
Our little dog Chip is the queen of relaxation. We are routinely jealous at her for being able to curl right back up in bed — usually our beds, mind you, rather than her dog bed by the heater — in the morning while day jobs call the rest of us.
Considering how important self-care is, particularly mental health, and how frequent it is as a new year’s resolution for people, we could all learn a few tips from our fur-children on how to take care of ourselves.
Go outside
Dogs love the outdoors and it’s probably one of the reasons why they’re usually such happy creatures. Soaking up a bit of sunlight can do wonders for your mood, as well as taking a walk and getting a bit of exercise to get your endorphins going.
Smile often
Let’s be real, dogs are usually goofballs. They’re always wagging their tails when they see their loved ones and friends, a simple form of communication that honestly perks up people. Who hasn’t been able to smile after seeing a cute dog spot you and wag their tail in a greeting?
Have a treat
Dogs never say no to treats and cookies. Don’t be afraid to have one yourself, especially as a reward or praise when you do something well. If you’re having a particularly bad day, treat yourself for even doing something small: “I loaded the dishwasher, now I can have a piece of chocolate.” Rewards make you feel productive and happy, like successfully learning a trick.
Enjoy a spa day
Okay, so not all dogs enjoy baths, ours included. However, there is no denying that having a bit of a spa day — someone else doing your nails or getting your hair done or a nice massage — bolsters your mood. Chip isn’t thrilled with going to the groomers, but she is definitely more energetic and bright-eyed after she gets a nice haircut.
Spend time with friends
Chip isn’t one for dog parks, but she has her “cousin” Cookie that she gets along with, her litter-mate Bailey, and her “brother,” Chase the cat. Being social once in a while is good for everyone, even if you’re just getting together for dessert or a nap.
Dogs as a whole tend to have good lives as long as they’re with good people. We could all stand to take a page out of their books for how to take care of ourselves and be happy.
